About Jan Meek FRGS (Fellow of The Royal Geographical Society)

Jan started her diverse and dynamic career in the early 1960s, working as a continuity girl in the film and TV industry. After ten years of rubbing shoulders with Hollywood stars such as Sammy Davis Jr and Jerry Lewis, Jan changed direction and moved to Saudi Arabia to work for the United States Geological Survey. She lived there for five years before returning to the UK.

Jan has since raised a family, run several businesses (a children’s boutique, restaurant, wine bar and a wedding and conference venue) entered civic life, first as Chairman of her local Chamber of Commerce and then as Mayor of her hometown. It was whilst she was a non-executive Director of the Heart of England Training & Enterprise Council that Jan started making motivational presentations.

In 1994, having been recently widowed, she took a year out and studied Chinese at the University of Taiwan.  She followed this by backpacking round China for 3 months then Australia, New Zealand, Fuji, Hawaii, and Los Angeles.

Then the world of record-breaking adventures came Jan’s way. In 1997, Jan and her son, Daniel. rowed the Atlantic Ocean together and in 2007 they walked to the North Pole together, becoming the first mother and son team to do both. (Please see Expeditions).
